Meet Disney's First Polynesian Princess In Stunning First 'Moana' Teaser

The ocean has never looked so beautiful

Prepare to fall in love with Moana.

Disney has dropped the stunning first teaser trailer for its upcoming animated feature starring the celebrated studio's first Polynesian, sea-voyaging princess. The computer-animated film -- the first from prolific Disney animators Ron Clements and John Musker, the duo that gave us The Little Mermaid and Aladdin -- introduces us to spirited, 16-year-old Moana (voiced by newcomer Auli'i Cravalho), who departs on a daring mission to fulfill her ancestors' unfinished quest.

But she isn't alone. She has her pet pig Pua and a once-mighty demigod named Maui (voiced by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) by her side, and together they traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage of self-discovery. Maui is a legendary figure in many cultures in the Pacific, and as he demonstrates to Moana, he uses his “mighty, magical fishhook” to slow down the Sun and pull up islands from the ocean's floor.

The film's musical score, which you can hear a tiny part of in the teaser, includes tracks from Opetaia Foa’i and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who recently won the Tony Award for Best Score of a Musical.

We also get a glimpse into Moana’s rich history with the Pacific Ocean, which is as much of a character in this film as anyone else. And that’s all rooted in the ancient history of the South Pacific. Musker and Clements visited the islands while researching the film. "The whole idea of voyaging wasn’t in our initial story," Musker told MTV News last year. "And then we learned what a source of pride it was for [the people of the Pacific Islands], that they were the world’s first great navigators, using dead reckoning to find their way across the ocean. We wanted to celebrate that."

Moana hits theaters this Thanksgiving, on November 23, 2016.
