Some Catfish tales resonate more than others -- and Ashley Sawyer and Michael Fortunato's story from Season 2 certainly struck a chord with viewers. The duo -- who both used altered images of themselves during their lengthy digital communication -- were kind, compassionate and refreshingly candid when they finally had the opportunity to unite face-to-face.
When the news broke that Sawyer had passed away at the age of 23 from unknown causes -- nearly three years after Fortunato died in October 2013 -- hosts Nev Schulman and Max Joseph paid tribute to a woman they described as "strong" and "sweet."
From there, enthusiasts of the docu-series proved just how impactful her installment was by immediately flocking to Twitter and offering their condolences to Sawyer's loved ones:
And on Facebook, fans recounted her special bond with the man she described as "the most honest, loyal person I’d ever met in my life":
"Ashley and Michael are now reunited together, forever." — Ryan K.
"This hit me pretty hard... I remember watching this episode. They were both the sweetest most caring people. I've watched on Catfish and my heart goes out to their families." — Laura J.
