For a group whose current smash single is about shirking responsibilities to play all day, Fifth Harmony are actually putting in a lot of work (work, work, work, work, work, work) these days. On the verge of releasing their sophomore album, 7/27 (which is, confusingly enough, out 5/20), the quintet continued to build buzz for their new era by making their BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge debut on Thursday.
First up, Ally, Lauren, Camila, Normani, and Dinah Jane delivered a bare-bones rendition of aforementioned single “Work From Home” that manages to be sultry while maintaining the song’s fun factor. No, Ty Dolla $ign doesn’t pop out from beneath the blue lights to lend his verse, but you won’t even miss him -- the girls’ gorgeously modified solos are more than enough to woo you.
Then, in keeping with Live Lounge tradition (and with their own track record of slayage), the girls served up a stunning cover of Elle King’s “Ex’s & Oh’s.” Over a bluesy arrangement, they give one of their most soulful live performances to date. Between Normani hitting that low register, Lauren’s raw raspiness, and the group’s piled-on harmonies during the chorus, the goosebumps will hit you like a sledgehammer.
