Even die-hard Friends fans missed this detail about Phoebe Buffay's long-lost half brother, Frank Buffay. Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) officially meets Frank (Giovanni Ribisi) in "The One with the Bullies," Episode 21 of Season 2. When Phoebe goes to visit her biological father, she ends up finding Frank instead.
But it turns out Phoebe and Frank had crossed paths much earlier than this, though. In "The One with the Baby on the Bus," Episode 6 of Season 2, Frank accidentally dropped a condom in Phoebe's guitar case. Yes, really.
If you need a refresher, Phoebe moves her Central Perk singing gig to the sidewalk after she's replaced by a ~more established~ musician. While she's performing, someone tips her with a (thankfully unused) condom.
"When I sang 'Su-su-suicide' I got $1.75, but then 'Smelly Cat,' I got 25 cents and a condom," Phoebe tells Rachel, "so, y'know, now I just feel really bad for 'Smelly Cat.'"
Seconds later, Frank appears: "Hi, did I accidentally drop a condom in your case? It's kind of an emergency."
Phoebe kindly returns the contraceptive to its rightful owner.
Then Frank runs off yelling, "Hey Christina, I got it!"
This happy coincidence -- or weird foreshadowing of Phoebe's surrogate pregnancy -- happened because Giovanni Ribisi, the actor who played Frank, was initially an extra on Friends.
"He was an actor that was used by the executive producers before," show writer Betsy Borns told Refinery 29. "They liked him, so they decided to use him more because they liked working with him."
There's your short and simple explanation, guys. Now keep binge-watching Friends until the end of time.
