YouTube star Sam Tsui -- you might know him as the guy who turned Adele's 25 into one impressive four-minute medley -- wants to let you in on a little secret. He just released a music video for his brand-spankin'-new song! "Secret" is the first single from his upcoming album, and it's all about the spark, magic, and love that keeps relationships going strong.
"I wanted to write a love song, but one that was more about celebrating that special something some couples seem to have," Tsui, whose covers and original songs have racked up millions of views on YouTube, told MTV News over the phone. "We obviously have friends that are in relationships that don’t seem to ever quite jive ... there’s fighting, and nothing is ever easy. And of course there are those other couples who just seem to have everything totally figured out. ... This song is kind of about how we’re all kind of trying to find what that is, what that magic ingredient is, the secret, if you will, that makes that work."
The video, filmed in Lose Angeles, is themed around the colors red, blue, and yellow and features three couples dealing with a rough patch in their relationship.
"I wanted to tell these little stories in a kind of heightened visual style with these bold, primary colors that I thought would grab [people's] attention," Tsui said, explaining that the colorful rooms were inspired in part by Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" video. He's also a huge fan of Michael Jackson and wanted "Secret" to "evoke an '80s vibe."
"The production crew went so hardcore," Tsui continued. "They were spray-painting bowls and tables and chairs. The whole studio smelled of paint fume because all of those incredibly detailed, colorful rooms were created the day of the shoot. ... Even the [contrasting] clothes that the actors were wearing were all white and dyed that day or the night before. It was a very artistic production, super impressive."
Watch the funky, uplifting "Secret" right here, right now:
It's catchy, right? This is the kind of infectious song you can't get out of your head. And it's only a taste of what's to come for Tsui, who plans to drop his second original album -- Make It Up came out three years ago! -- in the coming months. Also, if that wasn't good enough news for you, he wants to make "as many music videos possible" for these new tunes.
"One of the things I'm really excited about is that all of this music on this next album I’m co-producing," Tsui revealed. "Doing sort of the online digital, coming from that world, I think one of the awesome things is that it forces you as a singer and a musician to learn every aspect of what you’re doing. ... I have grown a lot as a producer, and so I’m excited that the voice ... [has] evolved and taken on more of a character. It’s gonna be a lot of funky, electric guitar atmosphere with the throwback stuff."
Oh, and if you're wondering what Tsui's ~secret~ to life is, it's all about communication: "I think that everything that goes wrong, whether it's friendships or family stuff or a relationship, it [comes] down to a lack of communication -- both parties not being on the same page. [From] what I’ve learned in my experience and the message of the song is about making sure you're communicating with everyone in your life, and then maybe ... you’re lucky enough to find that secret with them." 💞
