Get Your Rewind Button Ready -- The New Royce Da 5'9'' EP Is Here

A warm-up for his Layers album, out next month

Royce da 5'9'' didn't release any projects in 2015, but now, to make up for that, in the span of a few weeks, he's about the hit us back-to-back. The first offering arrived overnight, with the Detroit rapper delivering his Trust the Shooter EP, a warm-up for his solo album, Layers, hitting stores next month.

Trust the Shooter serves up 12 tracks up of Royce sounding characteristically locked in, delivering the kind of rhymes that make you stop paying attention to whatever else you were doing. The kind that make you press pause, then rewind, then play, then rewind again. The kind that make you laugh at the sheer absurdity of their creativity and intricacy.

He's brought along a few friends for the release, notably Black Thought ("Rap on Steroids" -- which is exactly what it sounds like, and teases an Eminem verse), Styles P ("The Banjo"), Smoke DZA ("Trust the Shooter") and producers like Jake One ("Wait"), Jahlil Beats ("Rap on Steroids") and a PRHYME reunion with DJ Premier for EP opener and standout "Black History."

Royce also dropped a video for "Universe Workin," a down-tempo, introspective track.

Layers drops on April 15.
