'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit' Trailer: Chris Pine is a Fine Spy

Chris Pine — or, as we like to refer to him around here, Captain Fine — is the the fourth Hollywood mandude to step into the spytastic shoes of the late Tom Clancy's CIA operative extraordinaire Jack Ryan for "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit." Alongside the release of the film's first trailer via Yahoo! Movies today, Pine's paying a little lip service to his esteemed predecessors.

First there was Alec Baldwin with "The Hunt for Red October," whom Pine revered for his "obsession with psychology," and then there was Harrison Ford in "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger," and Pine fancied his "unselfconscious humility." Then there was Ben Affleck in "The Sum of All Fears" ... but Fineypoo didn't really say anything about that. Ow.

Anyway, the point is, he had his work cut out for him in stepping into the role, but his mojo on the matter was, "I have one job to do, which is to bring this story and this character to life. I'd be doing everyone a disservice if my mind were elsewhere." Indeed.

So, with all the current goings on (cough NSA intruding on Americans' privacy cough), spy business isn't exactly your most popular fare these days, and Chris Pine decided that one of his jobs in making this movie was to justify his character's occupational pursuits.

About that, he said, "as much as Jack is a patriot who serves his country, that isn't what propels him. It's something else, something much more personal. And something that isn't determined by a flag ... a strong inner compass that compels him to protect other people from harm even if that means putting his life in danger."

Also in danger is his marriage (Keira Knightley portrays his wife) as his mentor-slash-recruiter (Kevin Costner) spills the beans on his secret arsenal-wielding career path and the Russian baddie (Kenneth Branagh, also the director of the pic) makes his move TO DESTROY THE WORLD ... or something like that.

So, it's all serious business for the young Jack. Except maybe in this one scene, which we children in adults' clothing might find totally, unintentionally hilarious ...

Heh. Get it? Okay, we'll stop.

Note: As the tail end of the trailer and this sulky poster note, the movie is currently listed as "Coming Soon" instead of releasing on Christmas Day, as it is scheduled to do. That's because it might get the scoot to Jan. 17 if Martin Scorsese can work his magic quickly enough to get "The Wolf of Wall Street" in the holiday slot. Read all about that bit of dramz here.
