‘Spinal Tap’ Vs. Actual Music Documentary Cliches

Watching "One Direction: This Is Us," the latest in a long line of self-promoting pop-docs, often feels like an endless exercise in déjà vu. The dramatic in-your-face performance footage, the playful “candid” glimpses of Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis goofing off backstage and even the tears of pride shed by their proud parents all seem like they were cribbed directly from tour documentaries of yore.

Ironically, all of these familiar moments of self-parody seem to draw influence from a concert doc that was a full-fledged parody itself. "This Is Spinal Tap," Rob Reiner's classic mockumentary of the hapless faux-band Spinal Tap's fall from grace, presents many a silly moment that doesn't seem all that far off from some of the exploits featured in today's superstar docs.

With this in mind, we created the infographic below in order to chart just which traits concert documentaries by Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Beyonce, One Direction and even the classic racy expose "Madonna: Truth Or Dare" share with "This Is Spinal Tap." Today's pop royalty might not feature a pint-sized Stonehenge on stage but the other similarities stack up surprisingly fast.
