Vin Diesel Drops Another 'Galaxy'-Sized Marvel Movie Hint

UPDATE (8/14/13): Vin Diesel has now pretttttty much now confirmed that he'll indeed be voicing the character Groot for James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie.

Per the Los Angeles Times, the muscle-bound action star finally spoke aloud (rather than just coyly Facebook-posting) on the issue of his Marvel dealings at the HFPA luncheon yesterday, answering the question of "why Groot?" with, "I'm an actor. I can do whatever the ... I want. As an actor, not everything has to be the most obvious choice." Well okay then!

According to him, it was the words of Steven Spielberg himself which inspired his decision to think outside his usual fast-cars-and-big-guns box and grow some bark for the big screen. The director apparently advised him to "defy expectations," and this is what Diesel's done to follow that directive. "If everybody thinks you're going to go for this one thing and you flip it entirely and for the strangest Marvel character, it's interesting. And when something's interesting, it's inspiring." (Seriously, is anyone else choking back the LOLs yet?)

Of course, it wasn't just the inspiring, leafy nature of Groot the Tree and all his unexpectedness that drew Vin Diesel to that part. It was also his super jammed, super busy, super important schedule. "I'm so busy," he explained. "The audience wanted Vin and Marvel, Vin and Marvel. But I'm too busy to do a six-month role. So what Marvel came up with was really interesting ... I am watching a social wave influence and in some ways guide their thinking."

By the way, Vin Diesel's totally got a theory going to as to why his bajillions of fans have just been clamoring for this Marvel connection. "Maybe they think of Dom as a plain-clothes superhero?"

You can't make this stuff up!

PREVIOUSLY: If nothing else, Vin Diesel has definitely figured out how to keep Hollywood types on their toes — especially, as he called 'em, the "Poor Marvel" peeps who are left having to clean up his viral spill messes.

For months now, he's been teasing this and that when it comes to his potential future relationship with the studio, and despite Marvel's head honcho giving all the talk a big red light last month, lo and behold he's at it again!

In the latest installment of Vin Diesel Internet Oops-ing (or, as we like to think of it, completely ignoring the existence of the term "embargo"), he's gone and dropped one galaxy-sized hint about what he might be up for with with the superhero powerhouse on — where else? — his mega popular Facebook page.

Yesterday, Diesel updated his page's cover image with this super-hinty image of Groot the Tree from "Guardians of the Galaxy," a character which just so happens to have not yet been cast for the Marvel Phase Two movie.

He didn't add a caption to his update, but this is definitely one instance where the picture speaks a thousand words, yes?

Of course, he quickly changed it over to something else, but soon after, Deadline reported that Diesel is indeed in talks to star in the James Gunn film, which will also star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Glenn Close, Benicio Del Toro, John C. Reilly, Djimon Hounsou, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan and Lee Pace.

As a bit of background for the uninitiated, Vin Diesel began e-hinting at his Marvel-ous connection back in June, when he wrote on his FB page, "Marvel has requested a meeting ... no idea what for... haha, you probably know better than me."

A couple of weeks later, he had that meeting and came out of it with another web teaser — an image of himself standing before an "Avengers" poster featuring Giant Man. Then, at San Diego Comic-Con, he promised "some very big news coming at the end of [the] month," but then studio prez Kevin Feige stepped in to rain on his parade state that "there's nothing to announce with Vin" and "it's so far ahead it may not even exist." But if Diesel's post is any indication, "so far ahead" roughly translates from studio speak into "right stinking now" because filming on "Guardians of the Galaxy" is currently underway.

The film is slated to hit theaters on Aug. 1, 2014.
