Christopher McQuarrie Accepts Mission to Direct 'Mission: Impossible 5'

It's safe to say at this point that the mission is going to end up being possible in the end, isn't it?

OK, cool. Now that that's out of the way, today's news: Christopher McQuarrie will direct the fifth installment of the Tom Cruise-starring action franchise, Paramount announced in a press release Monday.

This will be McQuarrie's third directorial credit, following 2000's "The Way of the Gun" and last year's "Jack Reacher," both of which he also wrote, and the latter of which starred "Mission" franchise centerpiece Cruise. McQuarrie also wrote Cruise's upcoming "Edge of Tomorrow," among other projects.

Drew Pearce will write the screenplay for the follow-up to 2011's "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol."

Cruise sang McQuarrie's praises in the release.

"I am thrilled to reunite with Chris for the latest installment in the Mission series," he said. "I began producing the films with the goal that a different director with his own vision would make each one. Chris is an extraordinary filmmaker who will deliver the heart-pounding action and thrills that audiences around the world have come to expect from the 'Mission: Impossible' franchise."

Further production details will surely come soon enough, but surely we can expect a lot of Lycra from Cruise, alongside a lot of this:
