Brace yourselves, Titaniacs. Kate Winslet's about to get mean on-screen.
Okay, okay, so she delivered a verbal a**kicking like we'd never seen before to Leonardo DiCaprio in "Revolutionary Road" — totally not a Jack and Rose moment, sob — but in the usual course, Winslet mostly plays the good guy ... er, girl. Not so in "Divergent," though.
Thanks to the newest dystopian heart-pounder, the world's gonna get some Oscar caliber villainy with Winslet as Jeanine Matthews, the brilliant but oh-so-cold leader of society's most power-hungry faction. Win! Don't count on seeing her real-life pregnancy bump in the movie, though.
Courtesy of USA Today, a first-glimpse at Winslet as Jeanine, the boss of the smarties in this futuristic Chicago world, is in, and she's got a lot to say about her technique for being tough.
"She walks down the corridor and sort of just leaves this vapor trail. I knew I had to bring that intimidation," she explained. "I'm no idiot. The idea went through my head that I have never played a baddie before. I was almost kind of surprised."
Apparently, she sort of used the fact that she joined production at the tail end to her advantage. "I wanted to break [the distance from co-stars] and say, 'It's OK, I'm really fun. I promise.' But I thought, just for today, I'd let them think that I am a complete b****."
That face says it all, no?
As for the device being employed to avoid baby bumpage on the big screen, it's a simple suitcase. Winslet explained, "I'm holding up fine. I'm pregnant, but it's not at the point where it becomes impossible ... Sometimes you just have to roll with it." It's just a matter of shooting angles, per director Neil Burger.
Meanwhile, Winslet's totes got the authorial seal of approval because of course. "Kate has gone with a very subtle, even well-meaning villain. She's not a mustache-twirling Disney type," Veronica Roth said. "She brings the menace in a very quiet way."
We'll see Kate Winslet's style of wicked on March 21, 2014, when this adaptation zip-lines into theaters.
