'Dumb and Dumber To' Too 'Dumb' for Warner Bros.?

On the heels of the box-office failure of "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone," at least one studio isn't betting on Jim Carrey right now.

Warner Bros. subsidiary New Line is not optimistic about the prospects for a sequel to Carrey's '90s hit "Dumb and Dumber," which co-starred Jeff Daniels. After years of false starts and rumors, both co-directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly and the two stars finally committed to come back. But now Warner Bros. has decided they don't want to finance it, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Writers cooked up a road trip story with Harry's illegitimate daughter as the movie's MacGuffin. They even had a clever title, "Dumb and Dumber To." The title alone is certainly better than the 2003 "Dumber and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd" prequel the studio made without the Farrelly Brothers, Carrey or Daniels (sorta reminiscent of the season of "Dukes of Hazzard" with Bo and Luke's cousins, or the "Back to the Future" sequels with the Crispin Glover lookalike the quirky actor won a lawsuit about).

According to The Hollywood Reporter story, the studio became nervous after "Burt Wonderstone" (which co-starred Carrey alongside Steve Carrell) failed to deliver, despite the fact that the Farrelly brothers have said they can make 'To" for about $30 million. Unfortunately that was the same price range for "Wonderstone," which only made $22 million at the domestic box-office.

The Farrelly brothers will reportedly seek out new financiers/distributors, with New Line still getting a slice the receipts. Perhaps the biggest disappointment here is that Warner isn't likely to distribute an "Ace Ventura 3" anytime soon, either. Wait, wait, wait, there was already a Jim Carrey-less "Ace Ventura" sequel, too? And it was called "Ace Ventura Jr.: Pet Detective"?!

Yep. Here's the trailer:
