Guillermo del Toro Takes You Inside the 'Pacific Rim' Robot

Guillermo del Toro's robots vs. monsters megablockbuster "Pacific Rim" isn't set to hit theaters until July 12, but if you want to know what it would be like to actually pilot one of the film's giant robots, then today is your lucky day, as del Toro has released a new production video that puts you in the driver's seat.

Or should we say, in the driver's massive metal harness.

Yes, unlike many modern sci-fi extravaganzas, "Pacific Rim" isn't all CGI. Instead, del Toro actually built a four story high mock-up of the robot's head, which he then used to film key sequences involving pilots Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam. "Every movie has to have a portion of analog practical effects to really convey the sense of physical reality of the film," del Toro explained.

So strap yourself in and get ready for the virtual ride of a lifetime. Just be warned: As this clip proves, "Pacific Rim" promises to be one very bumpy ride.
