You may think of Joey King as a little girl, but make no mistake, the 13-year-old actress is a big name. Most recently, you'd know her from Disney's blockbuster prequel, "Oz the Great and Powerful," in which she plays a tiny porcelain figurine whose village was ransacked by the Wicked Witch. This isn't even the first time King has acted with James Franco, one of the biggest names in the biz; she starred alongside him and Selena Gomez in "Ramona and Beezus" in 2010. She also appeared in "Crazy, Stupid, Love." alongside Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling, and "The Dark Knight Rises" with Christian Bale, among other film credits.
Expect to keep seeing King's name in lights as film's newest princess: She's in the upcoming "Family Weekend" alongside Kristin Chenoweth, as well as June's summer explode-a-thon "White House Down" with Channing Tatum.
Ahead, check out NextMovie's chat with King about "Oz," Batman couture and making her sisters jealous.
For the most part, your character in "Oz" was CGI. Were you on set the whole time though?
Zach Braff and I were in this booth, and they were filming our faces. And they attached our facial expressions onto our characters. So, when you see our characters make a facial expression or something, that’s all us. Also, we could go on set too and like, hide behind little things on the set and they would film our faces. They have separate cameras for our face. So, we were on set and in the booth for a lot of it, so we got to be on set too, which was cool.
What was it like working with James Franco? What had you heard about him before you started working with him?
I saw him in "127 Hours," which I thought was amazing, and he did a fantastic job. So, I was a big fan of his, and I was really excited to get to work with him. He’s just so nice, he was so funny. Him and Zach kinda took me under their wing the whole time, and they were just great. It was just such a fun experience to film with them and be with Michelle [Williams] and Mila [Kunis] and Rachel [Weisz]. Everyone was so great, we became like a little family.
Sounds awesome. I was just checking out your IMDB and I can’t believe how much you worked, you’re in everything…
"Crazy, Stupid, Love." was one of my favorite movies of the year it came out, so what was that like?
Yeah, that was really fun. It was a fun movie to film. You know, I didn’t have the biggest part, but I got to work with some great people like Steve Carrell, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Julianne Moore. They’re all so nice! Steve is such a gentleman, Julianne is so sweet and funny, and Emma was like a real sister to me, she was hilarious, and we got along really great. And Ryan is so fun and nice, everyone was great. The kid who played my brother, he was cool. Everyone in the crew was great too, so that was a really fun movie to film.
You’ve worked with some really big names by now. Is there anyone who really intimidated you, or is there anyone that you were really star-struck being around?
I usually don’t get star-struck, and when I do it’s very rare, but it’s exciting to work with all of these people. I’m usually always a big fan of the people that I’m working with, because I get to work with big people. I recently worked with Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, and that was cool, and that was so crazy. So yeah, I mean, I get star-struck in, like, a different way where I’m just so honored to get to work with them.
Yeah, especially the guys that you’ve gotten to work with must be like every 13-year-old girl’s dream.
(Laughing) Mostly like my sister’s age, is like 19 and 20.
You have an older sister?
I have two older sisters, and they’re both very jealous.
That’s great, and you’re like “Got that on you…”
I know, but they came to the set to visit, so that was fun for them.
You were also in "The Dark Knight Rises," as the little kid in the cave. Did you get to see the movie when it came out? Did you go to the premiere?
No, I didn’t get to go to the premiere, I was working during the premiere, but it was such a fun movie to film. I shaved my head for that movie! And, I got to work with Christian Bale and Tom Hardy and Christopher Nolan, and they’re just so nice, you know? It was really surreal because Batman is my favorite superhero. I am such a big fan of Batman. I have a Batman cape that I occasionally wear in public, yeah, and I have a Batman dress, I have Batman jewelry, I’m a big fan of Batman, so getting to work on that was ridiculous.
Had you seen the first two before you got to be in the third one?
YES! I love those movies, they’re amazing, that’s why it’s so exciting to be a part of it, I’m such a huge fan.
So you’ve been acting from a very young age, what was your first acting job?
My first acting job, I was in a Life cereal commercial, and that was really cool, and it was different because it was my first thing, so I was really excited and nervous, and I cried on set because I spilled the cereal and I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to! But they loved it, and I didn’t know that, so I started crying, I’m like “I’m so sorry, I did something wrong!” (laughs)
How old were you?
I was four.
What made you want to act?
Both my sisters and I were in Stage Door plays, and we did that together, just in, like, little small plays together. And we did that, and it was really fun, and we kinda did commercials, and it kinda took off from there. It was great, it’s what I love.
What did you get with your first paycheck?
I don’t remember, it was a long time ago.
You know, you’re out shopping when you’re four, just all the time.
Oh yeah, you know, going big or go home.
So, James Franco and Zach Braff, with whom you worked on "Oz," have both directed their own films. Would you ever want to direct or be on the other side of the camera?
I think it would be really cool and something I can do when I get older is direct and do acting as well, so I definitely would love to try that.
Is there anyone out there who has your dream career?
I love Jessica Chastain. I love her, she’s amazing and she’s such a good actress and she’s been nominated for Oscars and she’s just a big role model to me. I love her.
If you could cast yourself in any movie that already exists, what would your dream part be?
I don’t know, because I love tons of different kinds of movies. I love dramas, I love comedy, I love action, I like all of those kinds of movies, so there would be a lot. One comedy that I would want to be in is "21 Jump Street," that was hilarious! "The Impossible" was such a good movie, the one about the tsunami, that was amazing.
