"The Avengers" and "The Hunger Games" both had their moments at the 2012 Teen Choice Awards earlier this evening, but in the end it was "The Twilight Saga" taking home the ultimate prize, as the fan favorite vampire series won the Ultimate Choice award.

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, who were all on hand in person to receive the honor, sent the crowd into a frenzy when they gave their surfboards to disbelieving audience members.

The victories for "The Twilight Saga," which also included Choice Movie: Romance for "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" and Choice Movie Actress: Romance for Stewart, pushed the series' overall total to a whopping 41 Teen Choice Awards.

Though "The Twilight Saga" was the biggest winner on the evening, "The Hunger Games" was also a force, taking home the awards for Choice Movie: Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Choice Book. Stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson won surfboards for Choice Movie Actress: Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Choice Movie Actor: Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Choice Movie Liplock, while Liam Hemsworth won Choice Movie Scene Stealer: Male. Alexander Ludwig, who portrayed the dastardly Cato, won Choice Movie Villain.

"The Avengers," meanwhile, was nearly shut out but did end up walking away with one of the biggest honors of the evening thanks to star Chris Hemsworth, who was named Choice Summer Movie Star: Male for his dual roles as Thor in "The Avengers" and The Huntsman in "Snow White and the Huntsman."

In individual categories, Emma Stone won both the Choice Movie Actress: Drama and Choice Movie Actress: Comedy categories, for "The Help" and "Crazy, Stupid, Love." respectively. And Zac Efron rode a wave of fan support, topping superstars like Justin Timberlake, Channing Tatum and Matt Damon to take the awards for Choice Movie Actor: Drama and Choice Movie Actor: Romance for his role in "The Lucky One." That film also earned the surfboard for Choice Movie: Drama, making it the most dramatic romance in recent memory.

One of the highlights of the evening came from actress/singer Selena Gomez, who was shocked not only to win the award for Choice Music Group, but also by the crowd serenading her with a surprise rendition of "Happy Birthday." Though the crowd might not have had the chops of other musical guests like No Doubt and Carly Rae Jepsen, they sang with enough feeling to win over even the harshest musical critics.

That was just one of several lighthearted moments that helped distract from a near tragedy that took place earlier in the weekend; according to The New York Daily News, a pre-show party for the Teen Choice Awards at a Hollywood club Saturday night was interrupted when a smoke machine went out of control, injuring 22 people, many of them teens and children. Luckily, there appear to have been no serious injuries, though six of the victims required further treatment after evacuating the building.
