Ladies and gentlemen, Simon - that lovable little scamp from "The Mortal Instruments" - has finally been cast for Sony Screen Gems' film adaptation of the book, and the chap who'll play him is ... drum roll, please ... "Misfits" star Robert Sheehan!
Author Cassandra Clare made the big announcement today on her blog, and according to her, she's pleased as punch with the choice. "He’s totally cute and adorable and HILARIOUS, and his chemistry with Lily and Jamie is off the charts. I’ve wanted him for Simon for ages so I am pretty much totally and entirely happy," she wrote.
Clare explained that the reason this character casting announcement took so long to come out is that the thesps vying for the role had to hit up Toronto, Canada to test with the series' leads Lily Collins (Clary Fray) and Jamie Campbell Bower (Jace Wayland) "to see how the chemistry worked." According to her, that little rendezvous left everyone convinced that Sheehan "was the absolute best, the most Simon-y Simon."
Sheehan joins Collins and Bower atop the cast list which also includes Jemima West, Kevin Durand and Robert Maillet. Production on the picture is expected to begin on Aug. 15th, and a release date has been set for "The Mortal Instruments" for Aug. 23, 2013.
