UPDATE: It's official! In a press release from Lionsgate, Jena Malone has been confirmed as taking on the role of Johanna Mason in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire."
Considering the massive success of "The Hunger Games" and the fact that it turned Jennifer Lawrence into an instant A-list celebrity, it's fair to say that there's a lot of competition for the juicy new roles in the upcoming sequel "Catching Fire." And no competition is hotter — or role juicier — than the fight to play snide former Hunger Games winner Johanna Mason. It's like Hollywood's own metaphorical battle to the death.
Or, at least, it was. But now The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that we may have a winner, as Jena Malone is apparently in negotiations for the role.
Of course, it's important to point out that nothing is yet final and negotiations like this do sometimes have a way of falling apart, especially when you're dealing with one of the hottest franchises in Hollywood.
Still, it appears that the odds are definitely in Malone's favor. And anyone who has doubts that Malone, who is perhaps still best known for her roles in "Contact" and "Donnie Darko," can pull off the role of fan-favorite Mason need look no further than her turn as the ass-kicking warrior Rocket in last year's "Sucker Punch."
So what do you guys think? Good call? Bad call? Sure, you could wait until someone is officially announced before you form an opinion, but where's the fun in that? Let us know what you think of Malone as Mason. And don't worry.
There are plenty more roles — and therefore real life casting drama — yet to be announced. Buckle up.
