There's a distinct sub-category of Tom Cruise movies we like to call the "Leather Jacket Series," wherein the "Top Gun" actor rocks his Maverick haircut and some style of said jacket, as prominently featured in "Minority Report," "War of the Worlds," all the "Mission: Impossible" flicks, and even his upcoming "Oblivion."
Now we can add another entry in which he plays the hero in his favorite duds: "Jack Reacher," for which Yahoo! Movies has provided the spiffy new trailer.
This is the first in a hoped-for string of movies to cast Cruise as the famous protagonist of Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels, a former Military Police Major who goes from town to town as a drifter, fighting crime and such.
Cruise received a great deal of criticism for taking on the role, specifically for his height not quite matching the 6-foot-5 Reacher of Child's books. Fans might take even greater exception to Reacher being some kind of Ryan Gosling-esque driving ace, as the character in the book doesn't even have a license.
Given that, director Christopher McQuarrie seems to have crafted a tough, hard boiled action thriller with a "Drive" flavor, and Cruise looks good taking down bad guys with those elbow jabs. With that whole impending divorce thing and "Rock of Ages" tanking, this admittedly has not been a good month for Tom Terrific, but a glimpse at "Jack Reacher" reminds us that his days of thunder are not yet over.
