If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. That's why it comes as no surprise that Warner Bros./ DC Comics has chosen to debut its third trailer for "The Dark Knight Rises" with the release of Marvel's highly anticipated "The Avengers" on May 4. (That's less than two weeks away, people!)
As one of the executives over at Warner Bros. explained, "We see this placement as a good strategic decision. We always want our trailers to be seen with films that people want to see — and a lot of people will be going to 'The Avengers.'"
What's more, both 2-D and 3-D conventional showings of "The Avengers" (as well as 2-D and 3-D IMAX) will be playing the "Dark Knight Rises" trailer. In other words, they've got their bases covered.
Now, this isn't the first time Warner Bros has placed a big DC Comics trailer in front of a Marvel movie. Back in 2008, the third trailer for "The Dark Knight" played before showings of "Iron Man." But isn't there like, umm, some sort of rivalry between DC and Marvel? This is Hollywood after all. Apparently, the powers-that-be are willing to set it aside for the greater good (i.e.: better exposure and more potential ticket sales). The Warner Bros. exec explained to Deadline, "It will provide the best potential exposure for 'The Dark Knight Rises.' It's a big positive for everyone."
Now the only thing to do is wait and see which blockbuster brings home more bacon — once we find out, that old rivalry might rise to surface. Just sayin'.
