When we heard the news that Mattel would be cooking up a "The Hunger Games"-style Katniss Barbie doll, we kind of expected it to be a frilly rendition of her in that fiery interview gown (in other words, so not Katniss), but it turns out even Barbie can pull off cargo pants and a quiver.
Today, a sneak peek at Mattel's first Katniss Barbie doll was dropped by Entertainment Weekly, and as you can see, the proof is definitely in the plastic.
The face is far more generically Barbie than Jennifer Lawrence, of course, but other details remain intact, like the Mockingjay pin, the signature side braid and the rugged Games attire. Oh, and she's got her trusty Capitol-issued bow and arrow set at the ready, too.
Designer Bill Greening talked to EW about these choices for the doll, saying "I chose to dress her in the outfit she wears during the Games, since this is where all the non-stop action takes place and is instantly recognizable by fans ... Of course, she wears her Mockingjay pin proudly on her lapel ... Hopefully 'Hunger Games' fans can appreciate the attention to detail."
Pre-ordering for the Katniss Barbie doll begins today at noon EST on BarbieCollector.com, and it'll be released this August, right around when shooting for the second movie "Catching Fire" begins (hopefully).
So, tributes, what do you think of the Katniss Barbie doll design? On the mark or way off target?
