Vampires are all the rage these days — you know, in case you hadn't noticed — but no offense to Team Edward or Team Selene, when it comes to nosferatu there's still one undisputed king: Dracula himself.
And when it comes to hunting down the ultimate vampire, there's only one man for the job: Russell Crowe?
Well, maybe: According to New York Magazine, Crowe is in very early talks to play the role of vampire hunter extraordinaire Jonathan Harker in a re-imagined version of Dracula called "Harker" being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio.
In the original Bram Stoker novel "Dracula," Jonathan Harker is a lawyer who gets caught up in vampiric shenanigans when the lord of darkness takes a fancy to his wife, Mina. This time around, however, Harker has been recast as a Scotland Yard detective, probably because that just sounds more badass than lawyer.
It seems like just the kind of meaty role Crowe could sink his teeth into, but nothing is certain yet, including "Harker" even getting made. That's because the film is set to be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra ("Orphan"), who was supposed to be filming "Akira" instead before that movie got shelved indefinitely. Now the sutdio wants him to take on "harker" instead, but with "Akira" still on the back burner, what will end up happening is anybody's guess.
Of course, if a mjor A-list star like Crowe does sign on, that would probably put "Harker" on the fast track. Either way, one thing is for sure: With Dracula involved, this is one vampire movie that will be short on the mopey emo quotient and long on old school terror.
The king of all vampires wouldn't have it any other way.
