Henry Cavill has been steadily building up his résumé with period pieces and a recurring role on "The Tudors," but the Brit's about to get big -- really big, in all three dimensions -- in Tarsem Singh's lush action fantasia "Immortals" as Theseus, the founder of Athens and all-around bad ass. Who is that shirtless man? You're about to find out.

Age: 28

Hometown: Jersey, Channel Islands

What He's Done: Cavill played the son of Guy Pearce's character Fernand Mondego in 2002's "The Count of Monte Cristo," The Hunter in the family-friendly 2007 version of "Red Riding Hood," and the spurned boyfriend Humphrey in Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of the graphic novel "Stardust." Plus, there was that Woody Allen film "Whatever Works." And let us never forget the undead Nazi flick "Blood Creek."

What He's Doing Now: In "Immortals," Zeus taps Theseus (Cavill) to save Greece and the world from evil King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke). There are lots of swords, abs, crazy outfits, and a magical bow and arrow.

Reminds Us of: Let's just be honest and admit he and Robert Pattinson have those intense blue eyes, sharp cheekbones and distinctive chin in common. Perhaps, just perhaps, John Mayer, but we won't hold that against him. And a grown-up Rider Strong! You know, from "Boy Meets World."

Fun Facts: He was Stephenie Meyer's first pick for Edward Cullen, but then she decided he was too old to play the ageless sparklevamp. Ah, well.

Quotable: Cavill nearly threw in the towel when it came to pumping up for "Man of Steel" with the man who got Gerard Butler into shape for "300." He told Men's Health, "When I first started working with Mark [Dwight], I thought, 'How the f*** am I going to do this?'"

Shout-out: Woody Allen was impressed enough by Cavill's audition to change his character to a Brit. "I just loved him when I saw him. He's so handsome, God ... I don't think I did him justice in the picture. He's 10,000 times more handsome in person."

Famous Friends: Sorry, ladies. This super man has been engaged to professional equestrian Ellen Whitaker since May.

What's Next: His next movie, "The Cold Light of Day," is already in the can. He headlines this action/thriller alongside Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver; it's due out next April. And, of course, he's currently filming his role as Superman in Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel," which will fly into theaters on June 14, 2013.
