In this age of CGI robot battles and over-the-top 3D special effects, it's easy to take high octane movie magic for granted, but there's one group of performers who can never afford to forget how dangerous making a Hollywood blockbuster can be -- the stuntmen.
Sadly, just about the only time stuntmen are recognized is when something goes wrong -- and unfortunately, that's the case today, as Deadline is reporting that a stuntman was killed yesterday on the set of "The Expendables 2."
Details on the incident are still sketchy, but according to the report, none of the film's major stars -- such as Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Jason Statham -- were involved in the incident. Instead, the accident took place during filming by the production's second unit, with one stuntman killed and another serious injured in an explosion.
"It is with great regret that we confirm this unfortunate accident," Nu Image/Millennium Films said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the families and those on the production affected by this tragedy. The filmmakers are working closely with the authorities in responding to and investigating this accident."
The names of the victims have not yet been revealed out of respect for their families. "The Expendables 2" is currently filming on location in Bulgaria with an expected release date of August 17, 2012.
