If you ask your average man on the street what the greatest animation studio in the world is, chances are that just about every one of them will tell you it's Pixar, the people responsible for "Toy Story," "Wall-E" and a raft of other crowd pleasing favorites.
Ask hardcore animation buffs, though, and you may be surprised to hear another name altogether -- the name of Studio Ghibli.
You don't have to be an animation insider to appreciate the brand new trailer for Studio Ghibli's latest film, "The Secret World of Arrietty," though -- you just have to love great movies.
For those of you who don't know your otaku from your elbow, here's a quick refresher course: Responsible for such classics as "Princess Mononoke," "Ponyo," "Howl's Moving Castle" and Oscar winner "Spirited Away," Studio Ghibli is headed by legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki, who has been compared by some to a modern day Walt Disney.
And that's fitting considering that Disney has been handling American distribution of Studio Ghibli films for over a decade, allowing us the chance to see some of the most popular movies in the world ("The Secret World of Arrietty," with over $126 million worldwide, was the top grossing Japanese film of 2010) without requiring a translator service (sorry, purists!).
We could go on and on about all the awards "The Secret World of Arrietty" has already won, but honestly, the best way to get a sense for the phenomenon is just to watch the trailer for yourself. So check it out, courtesy of Apple. And hey, don't feel too guilty. We still love Buzz and Woody too.
