Tribbles. The Vulcan Mind Meld. Transporters, tricorders, phasers set to stun and "Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer!" Keeping tally of how much "Star Trek" has contributed to pop culture is nearly impossible -- and today, fans around the world are experiencing their own real world version of pon farr as "Star Trek" celebrates 45 years of sci-fi thrills.

And with J.J. Abrams getting ready to film "Star Trek 2," it looks like the franchise is set to truly live long and prosper.

Of course, exactly when fans will get to see the much-awaited sequel to the 2009 "Star Trek" reboot is still a bit up in the air; originally scheduled to hit theaters next June, Abrams and company decided to delay production in order to make sure the sequel is up to the first film's high standards.

Still, word on the street is that "Star Trek 2" will still begin filming some time this fall, meaning fans could see Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and Zoe Saldana -- a.k.a. the newest versions of Kirk, Spock, Bones and Uhura -- in theaters as soon as next Christmas.

In the meantime, fans can celebrate by watching one of the first 11 movies on DVD or Blu-ray and, of course, by checking out Pine and Saldana in our very own Hot People Looking Hot galleries. And here's to boldly going where no one has gone before for another 45 years.
