There may not be a script. There may not be a cast. But there is a director, and he has a lot to say about his upcoming reboot of the '80s blockbuster "Dirty Dancing."
Kenny Ortega (the man behind the "High School Musical" franchise) knows the risk in remaking a classic.
"We have a long road ahead of us," he admitted to The Insider. "All I can say is that I hope we can bring something unique and original to help change the naysayers minds about the film."
One way Ortega hopes to do that is by paying homage to the original while adding a new twist. "I'm not looking for someone to fill Patrick Swayze's shoes, or Jennifer Grey's shoes. They're one of a kind and they deserve to be called that."
That said, don't count Baby out just yet. "Everyone saw what Jennifer's still capable of on 'Dancing with the Stars,' wouldn't it be fun to bring her back too? I want to put that out there and see what she says!"
But who could land a leading role?
After judging last night's "So You Think You Can Dance" finale, Ortega told finalist Melanie Moore, live on the air, that she's got a part if she wants it. "She’s such a gifted woman. Melanie is an actress who can dance and those are my favorite kind of dancers to work with.”
We'll have to wait and see if either of these dancing darlings make the final cut, but it sounds like this fancy-footwork romance is off to a good start.
