Two rather pretty movie stars are down for getting dirty.

Reese Witherspoon and Matthew McConaughey are in talks to join director Jeff Nichols' down and dirty drama, "Mud," according to Variety.

Described as being in the vein of "Stand by Me" (a pitch you don't hear too often), "Mud" chronicles the strange and dangerous friendship between an escaped fugitive and the 14-year-old boy who helps him evade the law as he looks to reunite with his sweetheart.

McConaughy will play Mud, the fugitive, and Witherspoon will take on the role of Juniper, his lady in waiting. Tye Sheridan ("The Tree of Life") is in talks to play Ellis, the boy and unlikely guardian angel.

"Mud" marks the third feature film for director Nichols, whose "Take Shelter," starring Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain, has enjoyed a strong festival run and will hit theaters on Sept. 30.

Matthew McConaughey is currently shooting "The Paperboy" and will next be seen in Richard Linklater's dark comedy, "Bernie," and in William Friedkin's thriller, "Killer Joe," based on the play by Tracy Letts.

Reese Witherspoon recently signed on for Disney's "Wish List" and will next be seen opposite Tom Hardy and Chris Pine in McG's "This Means War," opening Feb. 17, 2012.
