It's about time the Bat-rumors started again.
Christopher Nolan thrilled Batman fans last week with his triple announcement: the title of the next film ("The Dark Knight Rises"), the fact that the film won't be shot in 3-D and the rather surprising revelation that the villain won't be the Riddler, as had been the rumor since even before the Riddler was invented.
Murmurings in the world of "The Dark Knight Rises" continue with news that Charlize Theron may have been approached to play the role of Detective Sarah Essen, according to ComicBookMovie.com.
Bat-fans know Sarah Essen best from Frank Miller's "Batman: Year One" storyline, in which she was the cop partnered (in more ways than one) with Lt. James Gordon.
We doubt Nolan and company will go for the affair subplot, as Gary Oldman's Gordon is such a straight-arrow, but who knows? "The Dark Knight" ended with a Gotham City that had lost Harvey Dent and driven out Batman. Might the pressures of trying to keep Gotham together without its two "knights" send Gordon into the arms (and bed) of one of his colleagues?
Meanwhile, the Bat-rumors continue with word that both Kacie Thomas and Vera Farmiga have read for the role of socialite Julie Madison, a love interest for Bruce Wayne. The role was previously played by Elle Macpherson in 1997's "Batman & Robin."
We apologize a thousand times over for mentioning "Batman & Robin," even if it might have been necessary to provide a context.
"The Dark Knight Rises" opens July 20, 2012.
