Fans of "The Hunger Games" trilogy by Suzanne Collins have been speculating for months just which young actress Hollywood is going to cast in the lead role of Katniss Everdeen.
Well, don't look now, but the internet is buzzing about a batch of new photos featuring one of the frontrunners decked out in a full Katniss costume -- and it's none other than "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" starlet Jodelle Ferland.
Before you start screaming in glee or righteous anger, there's one catch: the photos aren't from a "Hunger Games" movie. They're just the 16-year-old's Halloween costume.
Or are they?
Conspiracy theorists, of course, have been quick to jump to the conclusion that Ferland posted these pictures of herself as Katniss on her Twitter feed as part of a media-savvy viral campaign to land her the coveted role. But Ferland, who is best known for playing the doomed vampire Bree Tanner in "Eclipse," says that she was just showing off her cool costume.
"I think some of you aren't getting why I dressed up as Katniss," Ferland tweeted. "I am a huge fan of the books, and I thought that Katniss would be a really fun costume. Don't take it so seriously...I'm not trying to say, 'Hey, look at me. I should be Katniss.' It's not a competition Halloween is my favourite holiday, and I love to dress up as my favourite characters. For fun. I repeat... for FUN."
Of course, landing the lead role in "The Hunger Games" would probably be pretty fun too, so this looks like a win-win to us. Even if Ferland didn't intend the costume to be a tryout for the part, thanks to the internet buzz already building around the pictures, the whole thing has already had the effect of raising her profile -- only without making Ferland look like she's campaigning.
Now that's a real Halloween treat.
