When 2007's "Stomp the Yard" was released, focusing on a stepping competition and Greek life at fictional Truth University, the film became a surprise hit and its soundtrack would go on to feature a laundry list of established emcees and singers.

With the release of "Stomp the Yard: Homecoming," the sequel focusing on Chance Harris (Collins Pennie) and his quest to help his team win a national step-off, it's no surprise that the film's soundtrack again relies heavily on uptempo, energetic hip-hop. In contrast to its predecessor, though, the soundtrack for the direct-to-DVD sequel rests on the hopes of upstart, up-and-coming emcees.

When the original film's soundtrack was released, the compilation treated fans to hip-hop and R&B heavyweights including Chris Brown, Ne-Yo, The Roots, Ghostface Killah, E-40 and Public Enemy. Granted, many of the songs were previously released, but the soundtrack was a success due to the enviable roster. Here, a different approach is taken, as the stalwarts cede to lesser-known emcees such as Mr. Robotic, B Double E, and Get Cool.

With titles like "College Chicks," "Here to Party" and "Rock Yo Body," this one is aimed squarely at the clubs and deftly matches the intensity and enthusiasm of the movie's dance-intensive scenes.

While dominated by party-centric hip-hop, former Fugees collaborator John Forté turns in one of the album's best songs with "Nervous," a laid-back track bridging the spaghetti western scores of Ennio Morricone with the dirty drum-heavy production of Pete Rock.

Elsewhere, vocalist Jasper Sawyer contributes "Evil," a slice of uptempo funk nodding to Stevie Wonder and Raphael Saadiq. Overall, the album is a skilled sonic mirror of the film and an insightful look at the future top emcees.
