As far as paths toward pop fame go, One Direction and Fifth Harmony have had strikingly similar success stories, having both formed on The X Factor in front of our very eyes. Where the two groups stand today, however, couldn’t be more different. 5H are gearing up to release their sophomore album, 7/27, on May 20, ushering in a supposedly more “mature” era. 1D, on the other hand, lost one of its members almost exactly a year ago, and are now three months into a (hopefully just temporary) hiatus.
It’s somewhat ironic, then, that Fifth Harmony say 1D’s Harry Styles was the one who encouraged them to stay together. In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Dinah Hansen recalled the advice Harry gave them about not letting outsiders tear them apart.
“I remember we were in rehearsals,” Dinah said, “and he came up to us and told us as a group, ’All five of you should be on the same page and the closest things to each other because around all five of you there are gonna be people that are gonna come and try to snatch you. People are gonna try to break you guys apart. So as long as you five are your best friends, that’s the most important.’”
Like 1D, Fifth Harmony have weathered their fair share of breakup rumors, especially after Camila Cabello branched off to collaborate with Shawn Mendes last year. But the girls insist 5H remains their priority and their “first love.”
“Regardless of everything that’s been going on, that’s always been the focus, Fifth Harmony,” Hansen told ET. “Fifth Harmony is definitely our first love… it’s always been the foundation of everything.”
Just last month, Normani Kordei told Cliche magazine that she plans to go solo someday, saying she and her bandmates have “slightly different visions and aspirations.” She did add, however, that they have “more to accomplish as Fifth Harmony before that happens.” Much to fans’ relief, she told ET the same thing, saying they haven’t ruled out a third 5H album.
“We can’t predict the future but we most definitely think that there will be,” she said.
We’re sure Harry will be happy to hear it… and we can only hope he’s taking his own advice and making sure “this is not the end” of 1D, either.
