This just in: acoustic, genre-bending, low-budget covers are officially having a moment. Yesterday, we saw Camila Cabello nail a creative mashup of Rihanna’s “Work” and Drake’s “Energy,” and now, her buddy Shawn Mendes has followed suit with a dreamy cover of his own.
On Wednesday, the 17-year-old crooner shared an Instagram vid of him singing “Don’t Let Me Down” by DJ duo (and MTV Woodies performers) The Chainsmokers. Unlike the original, there’s no seismic synth drop; just Shawn’s restrained vocals, soft guitar strumming, and his buddy Scott Harris’ pretty piano playing.
“Hide Away” singer Daya, who contributes vocals on The Chainsmokers’ original track, dug Shawn’s rendition so much that she reposted the vid on her own Instagram, writing, “loooving this acoustic cover @shawnmendes! so sick.”
While we wait in vain for Shawn to cover “Don’t Let Me Down” in full (we can dream, right?!), he’s been holding us over with teases about his upcoming sophomore album, the follow-up to last year’s Handwritten. Along with sharing a slew of pics from the studio, Shawn recently expressed his all caps-inspired excitement on Twitter. He thinks we’re gonna love it… and we think he’s probably right.
AHHH I CAN'T EVEN EXPRESS MY EXCITEMENT FOR THIS ALBUM. GUYS I SERIOUSLY THINK YOURE GUNNA LOVE IT
