This weekend's box office results are in and the message is clear: Adam Sandler is a warlock.
That's the only logical explanation for the fact that his latest cinematic turd, "Grown Ups 2," ended up in a virtual tie "Despicable Me 2" for the top spot at the box office this weekend. It has to be witchcraft, devilry or some other form of mind control.
Whatever the case, though, "Grown Ups 2" had a strong debut, as the ensemble comedy c-starring Kevin James, Chris Rock and David Spade opened to the tune of $42.5 million. That wasn't quite enough to beat out "Despicable Me 2" for number one, though, as Steve Carell's family friendly hit brought in $44.8 million in its second weekend.
While Sandler and company can honk the happy horn, the news wasn't quite so good for Guillermo del Toro's massive and massively expensive robots vs. monsters flick "Pacific Rim." With a debut of $38.3 million, "Pacific Rim" will have a long way to go to recoup the reported $180-200 million budget. But it's too early to call it a flop yet, as "Pacific Rim's" marketing strategy has been decidedly global in nature, meaning there is a chance it could be saved by overseas figures.
Still, there's a lot of work to be done if "Pacific Rim" is going to earn its keep and join "Despicable Me 2" and "The Heat" in the winner's circle. Both films celebrated milestones this weekend, with "Despicable Me 2" crossing the $200 million mark domestically as well as the $400 million mark internationally, while Melissa McCarthy's "The Heat" cracked the $100 million mark domestically.
All three of this weekend's top films could be in line for a repeat performance next weekend as well. While the slate of new releases is crowded, with no fewer than three major studio films coming out, buzz has been pretty soft for both "Reds 2" and "R.I.P.D.," while "The Conjuring" is likely to be solid counter-programming. It should be interesting to see how things shake out in such a packed environment.
That's next week, though. For now, here's this weekend's full box office top ten, courtesy of Hollywood.com:
