If you want to be happy in this world, a good rule of thumb is to see anything and everything that stars the adorably gap-toothed French singer / actress Vanessa Paradis. In fact, she doesn't even need to appear in a film to make a meaningful contribution -- if her career as a pop star has taught us anything, it's that Paradis' voice alone is reason enough to check something out. With that in mind, it was probably only a matter of time before she was hired to provide the voice of a character in an animated film, and "A Monster in Paris" sounds like the perfect fit.
A charmingly dark feature from the director of "Shark Tale", "A Monster in Paris" tells the story of a projectionist in Paris circa 1910, whose love for the cinema is only matched by his love for his co-worker. Some crazy shenanigans go down in a laboratory late one night , and our hero accidentally creates a monster, the existence of which is captured by some rudimentary camera equipment (imagine like "Hugo" meets "Super 8", perhaps?). Paradis plays Lucille, a sultry cabaret singer who happens to be one of our hero's childhood friends.
Having debuted to extremely positive reviews in France, "A Monster in Paris" is finally coming to American shores on DVD & 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack on April 16 from the good folks at Shout! Factory. Check out an exclusive clip from the film, in which Vanessa Paradis sings like an angel.
