Alt Weekly: ‘56 Up' and More

Welcome back to Alt Weekly, a column in which we shine a spotlight on the independent films brave enough to open opposite Hollywood's behemoth blockbusters before rolling out in wider release.

This week, it's only fifty-something Brits and retired CIA agents who are bold enough to take on Leatherface.

'56 UP'

Filmmaker Cred: In addition to directing all but the first of the "Up" documentaries ("14 Up," "21 Up," etc.), Michael Apted has directed fictional fare like "Gorillas in the Mist," "The World is Not Enough" and "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader."

Star Power: No.

Festival/Awards Buzz: The latest in an ongoing series of docs that follows the lives of the same 14 people has earned just as much acclaim as its predecessors, which began when its subjects were merely seven.

Release Details: NY this Friday, LA on January 18, and these select cities after that.

See This If ... You've kept up with the rest of the series. (They're all currently available on Netflix streaming.)

Filmmaker Cred: Writer/director Damian Lee also made the 2011 thriller "Sacrifice," starring Christian Slater and Cuba Gooding, Jr.

Star Power: Andy Garcia, Forest Whitaker, Eva Longoria, Deborah Kara Unger, Kim Coates.

Festival/Awards Buzz: This would-be political thriller skipped the festival circuit, and for good reason.

Release Details: Already available on demand, "Truth" will make its theatrical debut in Miami this week.

See This If ... You've a desperate hankering to watch a preachy all-but-TV movie about the evils of corporate greed.
