'The Matrix,' ' A Christmas Story' Among 2012 National Film Registry Selections

The Library of Congress announced this year's selections for the National Film Registry today and among the movies being added to our nation's permanent collection are the 1983 cult classic "A Christmas Story," the 1999 sci-fi blockbuster "The Matrix," and the Oscar winning documentary "The Times of Harvey Milk."

Other major films being added this year include "Breakfast at Tiffany's," "Dirty Harry," "A League of Their Own," "Anatomy of a Murder" and the NFL Films documentary "They Call It Pro Football."

Created in 1989, the National Film Registry preserves movies that "represent important cultural, artistic and historic achievements in filmmaking," according to the Library of Congress press release announcing the picks for 2012.

"These films are not selected as the 'best' American films of all time, but rather as works of enduring importance to American culture," Librarian of Congress James H. Billington said. "They reflect who we are as a people and as a nation."

And that's one reason why the inclusion of "The Times of Harvey Milk" has elicited a strong response from film advocates like Dennis Doro, who according to The Washington Post has been campaigning for years to rectify what some perceived as a lack of films in the National Film Registry about gay Americans.

"I suspect that the tide of the country has changed, and that the acceptance by the vice president and the president of gay rights might have sent a message to the entire government, not just the Library of Congress," Doros said. "I'm happy that one of the great documentaries of all time has been accepted. It further legitimizes [the National Film Registry] as the most important list of films in the country for educators, librarians and the public."
