DVD 123: 'ParaNorman,' 'Men in Black 3' and 'Lawless'

In our weekly column, we give you the lowdown on the weekly top three essential DVDs and Blu-ray releases.

Mysterious thrillers and supernatural occurrences rule this week's releases. From the animated adventure that follows a young boy who can see the supernatural all around him in "ParaNorman," to the big summer alien blockbuster that continued the "Men in Black" franchise, "Men in Black 3" and the fantastic Depression-era cops and robbers drama "Lawless." There's big action and big drama to be found in these three powerhouse films!

In this delightful animated feature from the creators of "Coraline," one little boy, Norman (Smit-McPhee), finds himself a little different from the rest of the world as he is able to speak with ghosts and apparitions. When a terrible curse and several zombies are unleashed upon his small town, Norman must get help from his family, sister (Kendrick), the school bully (Mintz-Plasse) and simple minded best friend and put a stop to the witches curse. Touching and thrilling, ParaNorman is one of the year's best films.

Special features include commentary from the writer and directors, special behind the scenes featurettes that explore the making of "ParaNorman," exclusive trailers and much more.

This Blu-ray release also comes with an UltraViolet digital copy.

Men in Black III width=2. "Men in Black 3" 3-D

The Men in Black are back again in an all new time traveling adventure that pits the secret agents against alien hordes! Agent J (Smith) must travel back in time in order to save Agent K (Jones) from being erased by the villain Boris the Animal (Clement). Finding himself in 1969, Agent J teams up with a younger Agent K (Brolin) in order to save the world as well as the future from the villainous clutches of Boris. Along the way, Agent J discovers more of a connection between himself and K than he ever imagined.

Special features on this remarkable 3-D release include behind the scenes featurettes, scene investigations, progression reels, making of featurette, a Pitbull music video, gag reel, as well as a game and more.

The Blu-ray 3-D version also contains two additional behind-the-scenes featurettes focusing on 3D technology, and this 3-disc set comes with a DVD, Blu-ray and digital copy.

Lawless3. "Lawless"

Starring: Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Shia LaBeouf

A tale of Depression era bootlegging set in the mountains of Virginia finds a family of brother lawbreakers (Hardy, LaBeouf) find themselves up against a crooked law man (Pearce) who wants a share of their profits. As they continue to get deeper into the world of moonshine and bootlegging, they come into conflict with a mobster (Oldman) as they attempt to woo and wed women who will understand their way of life. Tragedy and family come into sharp focus in this dramatic tale of desperation and lawlessness.

This Blu-ray comes with a DVD as well as a digital copy, and features commentary with the director John Hillcoat and author Matt Bondurant, deleted scenes, behind the scenes featurettes exploring the making of the movie, and a Willie Nelson music video.
