"The Twilight Saga" has come to an end and to nobody's surprise, die hard fans are giving the beloved pop culture phenomenon a fitting send-off at the box office, as "The Twilight Saga: Break Dawning - Part 2" earned an estimated $141.3 million dollars in its opening weekend, placing it among the biggest debuts in film history.
That figure includes a whopping $30.4 million from Thursday night showings, which is a franchise best, just topping the $30.25 million taken in by "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" last year.
"The Twilight Saga" wasn't the only film making a killing at the cinema this weekend, though, as James Bond's latest effort, "Skyfall," took in $41.5 million in its second weekend, pushing its total to an estimated $161 million in its first ten days of domestic release. The strong showing from Daniel Craig and company also helped "Skyfall" move past the $600 million mark worldwide.
And Steven Spielberg's historical epic "Lincoln" also continued to earn both accolades and piles of greenbacks, earning an estimated $21 million in its first weekend of wide release. That amount was bolstered by strong word of mouth and critical fanfare from its limited release last weekend.
Overall, the box office was up 14% over last year, which is impressive considering "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -Part 1" was driving receipts in 2011.
