'Taken 2' Tops Crowded Box Office

"Taken 2" just managed to hold onto the box office crown for the second weekend in a row, topping a crowded field that included five new releases with a respectable $22.5 million.

That was barely enough to beat out Ben Affleck's acclaimed historical thriller, "Argo," which opened in third place on Friday but moved up to second for the weekend thanks to a rare A+ CinemaScore and extremely positive word of mouth. "Argo" ended up at $20.1," just ahead of the Ethan Hawke horror film "Sinister," which surprisingly took the top spot on Friday before tumbling to third for the weekend afterpoor word of mouth left it at $18.3 million.

Overall, it was the second big weekend in a row for Hollywood, with the box office up 45% over last year's figures. That's due in part to the unusual circumstance of having five new releases fighting for theater space and moviegoer's attention; with so many new movies, it was inevitable that some of them would be disappointments, which was the case for Kevin James's "Here Comes the Boom" (a very distant fifth place) and the indie thriller "Seven Psychopaths" (ninth place).

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower," meanwhile, just crept into the top ten in limited release.
