New York Comic-Con 2012 Preview

For all of you East Coasters who never make it out west for Comic-Con or Wondercon, fear not! It's finally that time again — when New York City is home to the awesome pop culture extravaganza known as New York Comic Con, held annually at the Javits Center. Fittingly, what with it being October and all, this year's major project slate is fairly horror-heavy, but there is plenty of panels and events for fans of all kinds. Not gonna be in New York? This article may still be relevant to you, because for the first time ever, NYCC will be live streaming select events; check out the entire list here. Meanwhile, here are our picks for coolest film-related convention happenings!

Friday, October 12th

12:30pm - 1:30pm, Room 1A10

Christopher Lloyd Q&A

He's Doc Brown, and he's kind of nuts, and this should be strange and lively as all hell.

1:45pm - 2:45pm, Room 1A10

MTV Geek

Okay, so we're kind of biased here, but come geek out with us if you find yourself free!

2:45pm - 3:45pm, IGN Theater

AMC Presents Kevin Smith's Comic Book Men (LIVE STREAM!)

If you've ever caught a Kevin Smith panel at Comic-Con, seen him live or even seen a DVD of him performing, you know what a hoot the man is when he is restriction-free. This panel is a guaranteed good (or at least memorable) good time, even if you haven't seen any episodes of his AMC documentary series.

3:00pm - 4:00pm, Room 1A10

Sean Astin Q&A

The lifelong Googie is also an eternal Ninja Turtle, and the BFF of Frodo Baggins as Samwise Gamgee in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Pepper him with questions about your Frodo/Sam fanfic here!

"Silent Hill: Revelation 3D" (LIVE STREAM)

We're interested in the film since seeing trailer and footage from SDCC, and they'll be premiering new footage here in NYC. A huge draw here, if we're being honest, is getting to see Kit Harrington in the flesh without having to wait in line overnight in order to get into a "Game of Thrones" Comic-Con panel. Also featured on the panel will be star Adelaide Clemens ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine") and director Michael J. Bassett.

5:15pm - 6:15pm, Room 1E07

Legendary Comics

Guillermo del Toro alert! It's a damn shame that it won't be in the IGN Theater, but it's in a big room nonetheless. Although del Toro said at Comic-Con that he wouldn't show anything new from "Pacific Rim" until the holidays, can we hope that maybe the East Coast gets a look at the fantastic footage he showed at Comic-Con? Pretty please? In any event, it's sure to be a great panel, with moderator extraordinaire Chris Hardwick leading the discussion on Legendary's upcoming projects.

6:45pm - 7:45pm, Room 1A21

Stuff You Should Know with Josh & Chuck: The History of Comic Book Movies

Josh Clark and Chuck Bryant, hosts of the "Stuff You Should" Know podcast, bring together some special guests to discuss the "campy beginnings of comic book movies," complete with limited edition exclusive giveaways to reward audience participation. If you've ever heard the podcast, you know it's fantastic. Throw in a comic theme, and how could this panel not be amazing?

Saturday, October 13th

12:15 - 1:15, IGN Theater

"Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2" (LIVE STREAM)

The animated "DCU" films are always wonderful, and when combined with the work of Frank Miller? A must. Plus, as always, aside from special footage to go along with the discussion, there will be exclusive DCU prizes.

1:30pm - 2:00pm, IGN Theater

"The Conjuring" (LIVE STREAM)

Warner Brothers makes their first appearance at New York Comic Con since "Watchmen" with this horror movie from "Saw" mastermind James Wan. Fittingly, this haunted house flick stars a "Watchmen" cast member as well, Patrick Wilson. Lili Taylor and Ron Livingston will also be appearing.

"The Bay" (LIVE STREAM)

Gotta love it when the indies and the legends start making their way towards New York Comic Con, and with "The Bay," we get both in one! Here, Chris Hardwick sits down with the one the only Barry Levinson, who's paired up with Roadside Attractions and the folks behind "Paranormal Activity" and "Insidious" for this eco thriller. "The Bay" takes a high tech spin on the found footage genre, with iPhones and Androids getting into the fun.

3:00pm - 3:30pm, IGN Theater

"Beautiful Creatures" (LIVE STREAM)

Whew! Take a breather from the onslaught of horror with a peek at the adaptation of this beloved YA novel. Our sister site NextMovie visited the movie set earlier this year, and it looks like fans of this supernatural romance series will be quite pleased. Writer/director Richard LaGravenese and stars Alden Ehrenreich, Emmy Rossum, Thomas Mann, Zoey Deutch will be on hand to chat, as will authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.

3:45pm - 4:15pm

"Carrie" (LIVE STREAM)

Cover up your dirty pillows for this crazy panel! We'll be seeing exclusive footage from this remake of the horror classic, and stars Chloe Moretz (Carrie) and Julianna Moore (Carrie's psycho mom) will be around to answer your questions about why prom is so very terrible. Director Kimberly Pierce in person will be there, too. Plug it up!

4:15pm - 4:45pm, IGN Theater

"Evil Dead" (LIVE STREAM)

Even if you recoil at the idea of a remake, word through the grapevine is this footage is under no circumstances to be missed. Bruce Campbell on stage is always a good thing, and if you're not completely obsessed with "Evil Dead" lead Jane Levy ("Suburgatory") now, it's only a matter of time.

Sunday, October 14th

3:00pm - 3:45pm, Unbound Stage

From Leia to Buffy: Creating Strong Female characters in Sci-Fi & Fantasy

The co-authors of "Mothership," Martin Leicht and Isla Neal, discuss their own heroine, Elvie Nara, as well other strong women in sci-fi/fantasy. This is always a worthy discussion to be had, so bring your two cents to throw in.
