Alt Weekly: 'Solomon Kane' and More

Welcome back to Alt Weekly, a column in which we shine a spotlight on the independent films brave enough to open opposite Hollywood’s behemoth blockbusters before rolling out in wider release.

This week, it's con gals and basketball players against the ghoulish guests of "Hotel Transylvania" and the near-future assassins of "Looper."

Filmmaker Cred: This is actress Famke Janssen's directorial debut.

Star Power: Milla Jovovich, Bill Pullman, Marcia Cross, Rory Cochrane.

Festival/Awards Buzz: Zip.

Release Details: New York this Friday, with a handful of bookings lined up after that.

See This If… The tale of a con woman/single mother trying to keep custody of her child doesn't already sound a bit too treacly to you.

The Hole‘THE HOLE’

Filmmaker Cred: Joe Dante ("Gremlins," "Explorers," "The 'Burbs") has made a career for himself out of his love for horror films.

Star Power: Haley Bennett, Teri Polo, Bruce Dern.

Festival/Awards Buzz: Dante's most recent feature made the festival rounds back in 2009 before finding itself in distribution limbo, though most reviews have found it to be a fun throwback.

Release Details: NY and Atlanta only this weekend before its DVD release next Tuesday.

See This If… You're a Dante devotee.

Filmmaker Cred: This is the first documentary from Marius A. Markevicius.

Star Power: No.

Festival/Awards Buzz: Fairly positive out of Sundance.

Release Details: NY/LA this Friday, with more markets to come.

See This If… You're a die-hard fan of the 1992 Lithuanian Olympic basketball team (and really, who isn't?).

Filmmaker Cred: This is writer-director Michael J. Bassett's take on Robert E. Howard's classic Puritan ass-kicker. He directed "Wilderness" before this and has "Silent Hill: Revelation 3D" coming out next month.

Star Power: James Purefoy, Max von Sydow, Rachel Hurd-Wood, the late Pete Postlethwaite.

Festival/Awards Buzz: Generally approving since its own festival debut back in 2009. (This is quite the weekend for that, apparently.)

Release Details: These fifteen cities this weekend. The film is also currently available on demand.

See This If… You’re in the mood for an old-school fantasy adventure.

Filmmaker Cred: This is Peter Nicks' first documentary.

Star Power: Nope.

Festival/Awards Buzz: Very encouraging notices.

Release Details: NY this Wednesday, LA this Friday, and more beyond that.

See This If… You’re fascinated by the struggles of an overwhelmed hospital dealing with its demands.
