DVD 123: 'Total Recall,' 'LOL,' and 'The Grand Illusion'

In our new weekly column, we give you the lowdown on the weekly top three essential DVDs and Blu-ray releases.

This is a relatively light week for major new releases, apart from the Miley Cyrus coming-of-age film "LOL," so we've focused in on two fine Blu-ray releases. It can't hurt to take a trip to Mars in preparation for the new 'Total Recall," so catch the remarkable 1990 sci-fi thriller now on crystal-clear Blu-ray. It's always nice to delve into the classics, and there are few better than the 1937 war drama "The Grand Illusion." Amazingly, all these releases are packed with special features to keep you busy for days.

Total Recall1. "Total Recall"

Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone, Ronny Cox, Michael Ironside, Robert Costanzo

Director: Paul Verhoeven

Studio: Lionsgate Home Entertainment

Running Time: 1 hr., 53 min.

Rating: R

A man takes a virtual vacation to Mars but becomes embroiled in a real world fight for his life. Or does he? This sci-fi classic is based on a story by Philip K. Dick and featuring some pretty amazing special effects for a '90s movie. While it's kind of terrible, it's also terribly good at the same time.

Granted, this one's a bit of a throwback, but it's good to catch up before the new "Total Recall" comes out on August 3.

This new "Mind Bending" edition comes with a lot of the old special features, but its highlight is an incredible new digital transfer, providing the best image possible of this classic. It also includes audio commentary with Arnold Schwarzenegger and director Paul Verhoeven, an interview Verhoeven, a making-of featurette, the traile, "Models and Skeletons: The Special Effects of 'Total Recall,'" a documentary called "Imagining 'Total Recall,'" a restoration comparison and a photo gallery.

Starring: Miley Cyrus, Demi Moore, Ashley Greene, Thomas Jane, Douglas Booth, Ashley Hinshaw

Director: Lisa Azuelos

Studio: Lionsgate Home Entertainment

Running Time: 1 hr., 27 mins.

Rating: PG-13

A new school year begins with plenty of drama and broken hearts after Lola (Miley Cyrus) breaks up with her boyfriend. As she attempts to make sense of her relationship with her mother (Demi Moore), and find her place in the world, her platonic friend (Douglas Booth) announces his feelings for her and throws her for a loop.

While this one didn't fare too well at the box office, fans of Cyrus and Moore will still find plenty to like in this high school story.

Special features include audio commentary with director Lisa Azuelos and cast members Ashley Hinshaw and Lina Esco, "The Cast of 'LOL'" featurette, "Like Mother Like Daughter" featurette, and a "Lots of Love For Lisa Azuelos" featurette.

La Grande Illusion3. "The Grand Illusion"

Starring: Jean Gabin, Dita Parlo, Pierre Fresnay, Erich von Stroheim, Marcel Dalio

Director: Jean Renoir

Studio: Lionsgate Home Entertainment

Running Time: 1 hr. 53 mins.

Rating: Unrated

This 1937 film is set during World War I and follows two imprisoned French soldiers as they attempt to escape a German POW camp. When their attempts fail, they are sent to a prison famed for being impossible to escape from.

This is the first time that this classic Renoir has been offered on Blu-ray.

This release has a ton of great special features, including some retrospectives about the film like "'La Grande Illusion': Success and Controversy" by Olivier Curchod, two featurettes on the film's restoration,  trailers from 1937 and 1958 and an introduction of the movie by director Jean Renoir.
