You know you're hitting the big time if you're replacing Christian Bale in a David O. Russell movie. That seems to be the case with Jeremy Renner, who is being chatted up to join Russell's film once poetically known as "American Bulls**t."
The movie is based on a true story about mobsters who leak info to the FBI to facilitate a sting that reaches into the upper echelons of society and the government.
As per Variety, Bradley Cooper is taking on the role of the con artist who flips on his cohorts once he's busted by an FBI agent named Jimmy Boyle. Bale was attached to the role of Boyle at one point but now it looks like it's up to Renner whether or not he wants to sign on to work with the notoriously difficult director.
The script, written by Eric Singer, is based on the true story of the Abscam sting run by the FBI that ended up convicting a whole host of government bigwigs, from a Senator to an INS inspector. Megan Ellison, daughter of Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, will be funding the film, which is set to start shooting in February.
With "Silver Linings Playbook" coming out this year and another movie that seems to be actually in the works, is there a chance that Russell's streak of stalled projects is finally coming to an end? We'll find out soon enough whether or not it's, you know, bulls**t.
Renner's first big budget starring role is in "The Bourne Legacy," which will hit theaters on Aug. 10.
