Movies Streaming/On Demand This Week: 'Casa de mi Padre,' The Dark Knight Collection & More

Indies rule the week as films like the Will Ferrell "telenovela" "Casa de mi Padre," ensemble comedy "Friends With Kids" and the black-and-white slow burn "The Turin Horse" are now available. But if Bela Tarr's latest isn't your thing, you can dive into The Dark Knight collection and check out Christopher Nolan's films – "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" – before seeing his final installment, "The Dark Knight Rises," opening Friday.

NEW RELEASES

'Casa de mi Padre'

Is there anything Will Ferrell can't do? For this indie comedy that celebrates the "overacting" of telenovelas, the funnyman plays a Mexican rancher who, along with his brother (Diego Luna), tries to save his father's ranch from a powerful drug lord.

Why Stream It: With its very brief theatrical run, you still have time to say you were one of the first to see what is sure to be a cult classic.

Available On: Cable On Demand, iTunes, VUDU, Amazon Instant

'The Three Stooges'

An originator of slapstick comedy, Moe, Larry and Curly's 1930s shtick is updated for the 21st century in the Farrelly brothers' long-awaited reboot. In it, the trio is involved in silly situations in three different acts (or "episodes").

Why Stream It: A fun homage to the comedy legends.

Available On: Cable On Demand, iTunes, VUDU, Amazon Instant

Jon Hamm's longtime girlfriend, writer-director Jennifer Westfeldt, looks at relationships in this comedy about two best friends (Westfeldt and Adam Scott) who decide to have a baby, though keep their relationship platonic. (And you know where that's going to lead…)

Why Stream It: Great ensemble cast including Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Edward Burns and Megan Fox.

Available On: Cable On Demand, iTunes, VUDU, Amazon Instant

'4:44 Last Day on Earth'

There have been a bunch of end of the world movies recently ("Melancholia," "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World"), but Abel Ferrara's pre-apocalypse tale strips it down to two people (Willem Dafoe, Shanyn Leigh), an apartment and the conversations and actions that take place on their last day on the planet.

Why Stream It: A powerful story with a touching performance by Dafoe.

Available On: iTunes, Amazon Instant

'The Turin Horse'

Playing off the supposed mental collapse of Friedrich Nietzsche – legend has it, after witnessing a horse being whipped and putting a stop to it, the German philosopher fell into a demented state for the next 10 years – Hungarian director Bela Tarr looks at the aftermath through the perspective of the horse's owner and his family.

Why Stream It: Tarr's films are rarely available in the States. See what he calls his final film.

Available On: iTunes

Renowned British director Michael Winterbottom adapts Thomas Hardy's classic novel "Tess of the D'Urbervilles," setting it in modern-day India with Freida Pinto as Trishna, a young girl in love but torn between her family traditions and the ambition she has from an evolving India.

Why Stream It: Some steamy scenes from Pinto and a beautiful spotlight on a changing India.

Available On: Cable On Demand (July 20)

'Here'

A popular title from the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, this Ben Foster-starrer is finally going out to the masses. In it, Will (Foster) is a map-maker in Armenia who connects with a beautiful Armenian art photographer.

Why Stream It: Another film that highlights the beauty of another country.

Available On: iTunes

OLDIES BUT GOODIES

Relive the adventures of Marty and Doc Brown as all three "Back to the Future" films are available through streaming. Hey, we still may not have power-laces or hover boards, but at least there isn't a "Jaws 19!"

Available On: iTunes, VUDU, Amazon Instant, YouTube

'A Face in the Crowd'

With the recent passing of Andy Griffith, check out the movie that put him on the map. In Elia Kazan's look at the trappings of fame, Griffith plays drunken drifter Larry Rhodes, who builds following as a radio personality in Memphis as "Lonesome" Rhodes and spirals out of control as his stardom grows.

Available On: iTunes, YouTube

Comic-Con Collection
