Halle Berry Vs. Barry Sonnenfeld

Sometimes over here at Film.com, we get confused when famous people have similar names. I mean, I only saw "21 Jump Street" because I thought it was a buddy cop comedy starring Jonah Hill and Stockard Channing. I'm still pissed about that mix-up.

Staring down the imminent release of "Men in Black III," we thought it best to preempt any befuddlement by pitting director Barry Sonnenfeld against the person he's most often confused with, actress Halle Berry. What do you mean, that doesn't make sense? Barry and Berry?!?! We'd better break it down as soon as possible.

RACE AND SEX

Halle Berry is a 45-year-old African-American woman.

Barry Sonnenfeld is a 59-year-old Caucasian male.

Advantage: Berry. We all know girls rule and boys drool, so no explanation is really required for this one.

EDUCATION

Halle Berry attended Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio.

Barry Sonnenfeld graduated from NYU Film School.

Advantage: Barry. GO BOBCATS! Or GO FIGHTING VIOLETS! I don't know, I never went to a sports game during my time at NYU. No one did.

CAREER START

Halle Berry got her start in pageants, winning Miss Teen All-American in 1985 and being the first runner-up to Miss USA in 1986.

Barry Sonnenfeld got his start as the DP on hardcore porn films.

Advantage: This was a dark time in everyone's lives, it seems. But I'll give the advantage to Barry, because a) he could probably make an interesting movie based on his time there one day, and b) he can never unsee that s**t, and I feel bad.

FEATURE FILM DEBUT

Halle Berry's first major movie involvement was as a crack addict in Spike Lee's "Jungle Fever."

Barry Sonnenfeld's first major movie involvement was DP of the Coen Brothers' "Blood Simple."

Advantage: Draw. These were huge directors and huge opportunities that truly jumpstarted both their careers.

GENRE MOVIES

Halle Berry jumped into genre work as Storm in "X-Men."

Barry Sonnenfeld jumped into genre work with his directorial debut "The Addams Family."

Advantage: Barry. Listen. "X-Men" > "The Addams Family." BUT, I adore the "Addams Family" films, and Sonnenfeld is responsible for them. Berry is the worst part of all three "X-Men"films. Point to Barry.

AWARD WINS

Halle Berry won an Oscar for her work in "Monster's Ball" (and an Emmy for "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge").

Barry Sonnenfeld won an Emmy for directing the TV show "Pushing Daisies."

Advantage: In my opinion, "Pushing Daisies" > "Monster's Ball," but it's hard to argue that a directing Emmy for an episode of a TV show wins over a monumental Best Actress Oscar win. Plus, she also won an Emmy.

RAZZIES

Halle Berry won a Razzie for Worst Actress in "Catwoman."

Barry Sonnenfeld won a Razzie for Worst Director for "Wild Wild West."

Advantage: YIKES. Draw. You couldn't pay me to watch either one of these movies again. Uck.

BEST MOVIE

Halle Berry's best film to date is "Bulworth."

Barry Sonnenfeld's best film to date is "Men in Black."

Advantage: Barry. "Men in Black" is close to perfect and a classic, even if the sequels don't meet the promise of the original. But also, guys, it's been over 15 years since either of these movies. What's going on?

NOMINATIONS

Halle Berry has been nominated for various awards 88 times.

Barry Sonnenfeld has been nominated for various awards 10 times.

Advantage: Berry. Lady's popular.

BOX OFFICE

Halle Berry's average film total gross is $61,365,675.

Barry Sonnenfeld's average film total gross (as director) is $ $97,730,746.

Advantage: Barry. Directing a bunch of major big-budget films will do that.

BEAUTY

Halle Berry has been named one of the most beautiful people in the world multiple times by PEOPLE magazine, and has been honored with similar titles for being gorgeous from Australian Empire Magazine, FHM, VH1, Stuff, BET, Maxim, Esquire and more.

Barry Sonnenfeld has never won any kind of award for being beautiful.

Advantage: Berry. Yes. When it comes to looks, Halle Berry has the advantage. Sorry, Barry.

CREDITS

Halle Berry has 43 IMDB credits as an actress and 3 as a producer.

Barry Sonnenfeld has 19 credits as director, 18 as a producer, 15 as a cinematographer, 10 as an actor, 5 in camera/electrics and 1 as a writer.

Advantage: Barry. Overall he's worked on more projects and is majorly multi-talented. Plus, these credits include being DP for"Raising Arizona," "Big," "When Harry Met Sally," "Miller's Crossing" and "Misery." WIN.

CURRENT/FUTURE PROJECTS

Halle Berry's next major movie is "Cloud Atlas."

Barry Sonnenfeld's new major movie is "Men in Black III."

Advantage: Berry. While I'm definitely looking forward to the third installment of the alien comedy franchise, "MIB3" is barely holding onto Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and I really don't care for Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones. Meanwhile, "Cloud Atlas" marks the Wachowskis' return to sci-fi in a giant, epic way. It could be a disaster, but it could be mind-blowingly amazing. So I'm sticking with Berry on this one.

AND THE WINNER IS ...

Overall, Berry takes 5 categories, while Barry takes 6. An unexpected victory by Barry Sonnenfeld, mostly owing to the fact that he went to NYU, and I'm biased when it comes to fellow alums. Without that consideration, it would be a draw!

But seriously. Maybe the man has directed some turkeys named "Wild Wild West" and "RV," but he also shot "Misery," so give him a break. Thanks for checking out our super-scientific research in coming to this conclusion. I'm proud of me, too.
