Smash lives on. NBC has picked up the Broadway based musical drama for a second season.
Despite middling ratings after its strong debut in February and waning critical enthusiasm, Smash is still NBC's highest rated drama. Its average of 7.7 million viewers (with a 2.6 rating in the key demographic) is the best showing by any drama the network has tried in the 10 PM Monday timeslot in years, and last week it more than held its own against ABC's Castle and CBS heavy hitter Hawaii Five-0. Additionally, when you take DVR playbacks into account, Smash regularly adds several million more viewers on a weekly basis.
This is the second freshman show NBC has renewed, after last week's announcement that Grimm shall continue fighting monsters well into 2013.
