For the first time since the pair married after a blink-and-you-missed-it courtship, the real job of Lamar Odom and the fake job of Khloé Kardashian have come into conflict.
After several days where he was part of trade rumors that first had him going to play for the New Orleans Hornets, Odom was traded Sunday from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Dallas Mavericks, the team that eliminated the Lakers from the most recent NBA playoffs. The news isn’t necessarily bad for Odom – Dallas is the defending NBA champion, and Odom wanted out of L.A. once it became clear his old team found him expendable.
But pro athletes are used to the notion that they can be moved at any time, and Odom’s run in Los Angeles lasted for seven years, a decent stint for someone who is a good player, but not quite an All-Star. It’s a different story for Khloé, though. Kourtney and Khloé Take Miami aside, she has never truly lived anywhere other than Southern California. And while TMZ is reporting that E! cameras will follow the couple to Dallas for their spinoff show Khloe and Lamar, Lamar is pretty expendable as far as the E! audience is concerned. Those who don’t follow sports might be surprised to learn that he is much wealthier than his wife, and it isn’t close.
But Khloé needs proximity to her sisters in order to maintain a TV career, and Kim and Kourtney aren’t going to Dallas.
Don’t think Khloé doesn’t realize this. Her first reaction to the trade news was to admit on Twitter that “I am a tad thrown off” and “we are all sad but positive energy gets you farther than negative.” But she tried to buck herself up, tweeting later that “I have no doubt about it! I am excited :) I know this is for a reason.” As if trying to convince herself with extra exclamation points, she added “God is great!! Blessed beyond words!” She means it, people!
Dallas has been the site of a few reality shows – it might be a different story were E! were faced with making Khloé and Lamar Take Sacramento – but it’s still an open question as to how much time Khloé will be spending there, given that Lamar will be on the road with the Mavericks half the time anyway, and given her responsibilities in the family’s L.A.-based reality empire.
