The Fat Suit Stays in the Picture
Verdict: Yes, it's the most interesting character Cruise has played since ... well, a long time. But a whole feature based on screaming, swearing, and humpty dance? Sounds a lot like the last 15 Saturday Night Live movies, where something that was funny for seven minutes (or at least funny-ish) turned out to be deadly for 90. I'm looking at you, MacGruber.
Sorry, Ladies, Harrison Ford Is Officially Taken. He Is Also 67.
TMZ reported Tuesday that Ford finally married Calista Flockhart, after eight years and one child together. The ceremony was performed by New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson at the governor's mansion in Santa Fe, where Ford is filming Cowboys and Aliens. Flockhart isn't filming anything.
Verdict: So it looks like the dream is dead. Han Solo and Princess Leia are never going to get married and rule the galaxy from the flight deck of the Millennium Falcon.
Karate Kid's a Smash! Uh-oh.
The Karate Kid reboot cleaned up at the box office last weekend, pulling in $56 million, more than double the weekend's other big release, The A-Team. If the studio accountants decide that the new foolproof formula for box-office success is Reboot + Cute Kid + Lady Gaga Song = $$$$, it's going to be a long decade.
Verdict: Granted, the big movie that Karate Kid beat out was yet another tired '80s retread, but still, this can't mean good things for moviegoers. What's next, a remake of Monster Squad, that awful kids-chasing-Dracula movie from 1987?
Going Boldly Where He Went in 1979
Ridley Scott told the crowd at the L.A. Times' Hero Complex Film Festival that the script for his Alien prequel is written and ready to go, and hinted that he'll begin shooting next January, and that it'll be in 3-D. Set 30 years before the original, it goes into the story of the huge corpse that the crew of the Nostromo found floating in space in Alien.
Verdict: This actually sounds interesting, and I love that it follows up on a mystery that Scott planted in the first one. Then again, can anything get rid of the stench of Alien vs. Predator: Requiem? Fine, Scott hasn't been near the series in 20 years, but...
