"Summit Entertainment and director Catherine Hardwicke jointly announced today that the filmmaker will not be directing the next installment in the newly minted TWILIGHT film franchise. Summit’s targeted end of 2009 or early 2010 release of the film, NEW MOON, does not work with Ms. Hardwicke’s required prep time to bring her vision of the film to the big screen."
For the record, this is a face-saving move by both Hardwicke and Summit Entertainment. They noticed the critical reviews, heard a bit of the fan feedback, and realized they needed something a little different for the sequel. Hardwicke will be around in this business for a long time, and she did the best she could given the short schedule. The next director should be a heavy hitter, someone who can make a crossover movie for both the Twi-Hards and the average Joe.
So then, who will replace her? In my previous article I suggested Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine), Sarah Polley (Away From Her), Julie Delpy (2 Days in Paris), and Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation). My friend Brad over at RopeofSilicon.com listed Kimberly Peirce, Kathryn Bigelow, Niki Caro, Patty Jenkins, Julie Taymor and Mira Nair. Let's put them all in a poll. I think Summit is listening, so this is our chance. Who is the best creative mind for New Moon?
