Once again, it's a weekend battle of head-to-head stars. In this corner, we have the man best known for dressing up as a woman, Tyler Perry in Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married. And in this corner we have a women making headlines for playing not just a man, but Bob Dylan (but not in this movie), Cate Blanchett. You know the rules. Let's drop the cage. Two men enter! One man leaves! Dressed as a man…or…something like that.
In the box office this weekend: Winner = Perry:
I hate this weekend with a passion. Ever year it is the same thing. A bunch of really good under-the-radar flicks that the studio has no faith in, along with a healthy amount of lame films no one has faith in, get dumped in the second weekend of October. And on this weekend I always bet on the movie with the built-in audience. Perry gets this for his devoted fanbase.
In the critical arena: Winner = Blanchett:
Let's forget that Cate is a critic favorite. Let's forget that I love her with all my heart and soul. Let's even forget that she's an Oscar winner. Her movie Elizabeth: The Golden Age (yes, it's a sequel to Elizabeth) is incredible. Critics are going to eat it up with a spoon. Perry on the other hand makes movies for a very specific audience, often at the expense of any other audience, so his film will most likely be a case of either you get it or you don't.
In their careers: Winner = Blanchett :
Perry's worked his way up and become a success story, but he's yet to break into the mainstream in a big way. Blanchett, on the other hand, is a force of nature who has yet to stop impressing us since she first wowed us nine years ago (in the first Elizabeth). And she has an Oscar. Blanchett, hands down.
In a fight: Winner = Perry:
But they better both be wearing dresses or else it's just not gonna seem fair.
